The Metaphysical in the works of Milton and Donne.
[ send me this paper ]
(9pp)According to Sir Herbert J.C. Grierson (1997
) "Metaphysical poetry, in the full sense of the
term, is a poetry which has been inspired by a
philosophical conception of the universe and the
rôle assigned to the human spirit in the grea
t drama of existence. Doesn't that definition
sound elegant? When was the last time that you
acknowledged your role in the "great drama of
existence?" The reason that I mention this is
that the study of "metaphysics," is becoming more
popular each year. Yet, what we will look at in
this discussion is the historic roots of the form
as seen through the poetry of John Milton and
John Donne. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

The Power of Medieval European Guilds
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp.) After the fall of the Roman Empire,
Europe retained a sense of chaotic movement. The
old structure of government and power had crumbled
away, and no singular system was yet organized
enough to replace it. A beginning of that
re-organization began around the learning of the
skills and the crafts of a trade; the structure
was called the guild. Bibliography lists 4 sources. BBmdigld.doc

The Rise Of Catholicism: 900 - 1420
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper. When Charlemagne died in 814, he left an empire that had no legal or administrative structure. What little stability existing during his time was shattered with the invasion of the Vikings. The Christian Crusades began shortly, a noble goal that soon turned to a crusade for wealth rather than its original purpose. This essay explains how the Church and the papacy gained such incredible power and wealth during this era, including the Inquisition and the eventual conflict between state and church. Information is based on Fiero's work. Bibliography lists 1 source.

The Romans and Visigoths in Ancient Spain
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report
discusses the Spain of the Romans and then the Visigoths. The
Romans conquered Spain in the last years of the third century
B.C. Historical accounts have shown that they took every
advantage of the military and economic opportunities offered by
Spain at the expense of Spain’s indigenous societies. When the
Germanic peoples invaded the provinces of the Roman Empire, the
hordes, urged forward by the pressure of the Huns in their rear,
hurled themselves for the first time upon the Pyrenean Peninsula.
The Visigothic Kingdom lasted for two centuries in Spain.
