The Hajj
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing the Muslim pilgrimage, the Hajj from a religious and modern perspective. The Hajj (Al-Hajj) is an obligatory pilgrimage for Muslims to Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia during the month of Hajj, Dhul Hijjah. Hajj is the Fifth Pillar of Islam and is therefore a requirement of all Muslims who are capable of making the journey. The Umrah is an optional lesser pilgrimage which can be performed any time during the year for those who are not able to perform the Hajj. Al-Hajj takes place over five days from the 8th to the 13th days of Dhul Hijjah. The term “Hajj” literally means “a resolve” such as “to resolve to some magnificent duty” and it is considered as “the realization of Prophet Abraham’s Prayer”. The commitment to the Hajj is not an easy one as pilgrims must be physically, mentally and financially be able to make the journey and complete the five days of strict rituals. Despite the complexity of the Hajj, over 2 million Muslims make the pilgrimage each year and are supported by the citizens of Mecca and the country of Saudi Arabia which continues to update the city to accommodate more pilgrims.

The Impossibility of Peace in the Middle East: A Historical Perspective
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the historical background for the quest for peace in the Middle East which has been the focus of world attention for generations. This paper asserts that from a Palestinian perspective this goal is simply unobtainable. Indeed, the impracticality of peace in the Middle East is demonstrated over and over again in history. The history of the region is one of violence and social strife, a history which is replete with conflict between religions and cultures. Unfortunately, these same frictions continue to exist today and they will continue to exist well into the future. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

The influence of Religon on Sex Roles in the Muslim
Culture.
[ send me this paper ]
(6 pp) In addition to western thought and
education there are three other areas that
influence the life of a Muslim. According to
Hussain (2000), they are: the Islamic scriptures
--Quran and Hadith as interpreted b Ulamas,
Mullahs, Muftis and Maulavis, and communicated
through Madrasahs and Mosques, and administered
through the Islamic state wherever there is one.
The second is Tasawwuf (Islamic mysticism),which
seeks truth through personal religious experience
and not through the scriptures and is espoused by
the Sufis (religious mystics). And the third is
Adab (a concept broadly meaning art and literature)
as a sub-culture of broad-minded and urbane
people of high learning and literary tastes.Poets,
writers and artists are its communicators. Among
Indian Muslims the medium of Adab was Persian. Now
it is Urdu. Because of this orientation, looking
at the influence of religion on the sex roles
between men and women is not as simple within the
Muslim culture as it might initially seem.

The Islamic Community of San Diego and the Impact of the Events of September 11, 2001
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper describing the impact of the September 11th, 2001 had on the Islamic community of San Diego. The Islamic community in San Diego was hard hit after the terrorists’ attacks of September 11, 2001 for many reasons: firstly, two of the terrorists were found to have been living in their community before the attacks; secondly, in the mid-1990s, an Islamic extremist group, the American Islamic Group, decided to move their central headquarters to San Diego from the East Coast; and third, despite the fact that the population of Muslims in the San Diego area is over 100,000 and the history of their community goes back over 100 years, the non-Muslim community in the area had instantly began to fear and resent them. Because of this, the Muslim community in San Diego immediately began information and educational forums in an attempt to open and introduce the Islamic community to their neighboring communities. Although, the response to their open forums was slow at first, they hope that with continued effort on their behalf and on the behalf of non-Muslims that their fellow Americans will understand that Islam is a religion based on peace and not hatred.

The Jihad And Its Impact On The Crusades
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Had it not been for Saladin's courage and unwavering perseverance, Egypt would never have been recognized as a major power of the Middle East. The death of Zangid ruler Nur Al-Din cleared the way for Saladin's takeover of Syria's Zangid kingdom just prior to the Jihad, or holy war, that he waged against the Crusaders. A staunch opponent of the Crusades, Saladin made it his life's mission to crush the movement and restore people with peace and prosperity. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

The Middle East: Islam Religion And Arabic Language Taking Hold In 800 AD
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. To believe that God is almighty and the primary source of enlightenment is to understand the very cornerstone of Islamic principle. However, the road to Islam's expansion in 800 AD Egypt, Syria and Iran was not paved with roses, but rather frequently sprinkled with many
deep and offensive thorns. Pre-Islamic culture in Egypt, Syria and Iran experienced significant opposition with regard to the issues related to the rise and subsequent rapid spread of Islam. There was nothing left untouched with regard to the affect of Islam: food, clothing, social customs, art, literature and anything else that played an
integral role in a person's life was significantly altered by Islamic intervention. Arabic lettering assumed the job of expressing the native dialect; in fact, such customary usage of the Arabic language had become especially widespread as to be fully adopted by Egypt, Syria and Iran.
