Mexico as a “Poison” to the U.S.?: A Discussion of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Prediction
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the historic and contemporary relationship between Mexico and the U.S. Emerson’s prediction that Mexico would prove to be a “poison” to the U.S. was made in response to the certainty that vast western lands would be taken from Mexico by the United States during the Mexican American War (1846 to 1848). Emerson was concerned that Mexico’s proximity to the United States would prove to be an economic and social drain on the U.S. His use of the metaphor “poison” reflects the intensity of his feelings on this subject. To Emerson Mexico’s political sovereignty and even her diverse culture was a threat to U.S. sovereignty and cultural congruity. This paper uses the example of Mexican immigration to the U.S. to conclude that in reality Mexican and U.S. interaction has proven to be more positive than negative. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Michael Latham/Modernization as Ideology
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page book review. Michael E. Latham, an associate professor of history at Fordham University, provides provocative insight into the manner in which theories of modernization were highly influential to American policymakers during the Kennedy Administration. The principal argument of Latham's text is that perspective on modernization traveled beyond their origins in academia to become an influential force in shaping both American foreign policy and how Americans perceived of themselves in terms of national identity. Examination of this text shows that Latham's argument is detailed, scholarly and sheds new light on the mechanisms behind the perpetuation of the Cold War. No additional sources cited.

Michael Mandelbaum's "The Ideas That Conquered The
World: Peace, Democracy, And Free Markets In The Twenty-First Century"
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The United States is built upon a solid foundation of three primary elements: peace, democracy and the free market; to eliminate any one of these factors would remove the synergistic composition that has resulted over the past century. Michael Mandelbaum's "The Ideas That Conquered the World: Peace, Democracy, and Free Markets in the Twenty-First Century" heralds these three critical components as being the saving grace to a nation that might otherwise not be what it is today without their integrated impact. To Mandelbaum (2004), the manner by which "…peace as the preferred basis for relations among countries; democracy as the optimal way to organize political life within them; and the free market as the indispensable vehicle for producing wealth" (p. Intro) has protected and progressed America is like nothing else in the entire world. No additional sources cited.
