Alderian Therapy in Group Work
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper discussing Adler’s Individual Psychology, group counseling theory and cultural characteristics of Hispanic Americans. Adler’s motivational theory is directly applicable to Hispanic Americans. The group approach can be useful with Hispanic Americans because it is a natural, comfortable approach for them culturally. If the group counselor can successfully facilitate substitution of groups, then the group approach should be quite successful with Hispanic Americans. It allows individuals to enjoy a comfortable and known setting while navigating previously-uncharted territories, allowing them to place more direct attention on the issues at hand. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Alfie Kohn's Beyond Discipline Model
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Kohn (1996) considers conventional methods of assertive discipline to be nothing more than "a collection of bribes and threats whose purpose is to enforce rules that the teacher alone devises and imposes" (p. PG) that do little else but teach the student how everything in life can be negotiated by way of manipulation. The fundamental purpose of Kohn's model is to encourage responsibility and self-discipline without the use of what he perceives as controlling methods of reward and punishment. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Altered States of Consciousness and Hypnosis
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page
report discusses hypnosis and the altered state of consciousness
it produces. While the term “hypnosis” often carries a certain
number of negative connotations that do not truly convey the
beneficial and physiological relation response that is the
legitimate hypnotic response, many people are still hesitant
about the concept in general. The simple fact is that hypnosis is
not a form of mind control and is not the will of one person
being exerted over another. Health professionals, mental health
counselors, even sports performance consultants advocate hypnosis
as a form of stress reduction, pain management and personal
performance enhancement. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Ambiguity And Humor
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Humor is as much an interpretive device as cultural customs or personal experiences. To bypass the ambiguity inherently associated with humor is to realize the vast implications of syntax, language barriers and cultural "insider" aspects of content. The extent to which ambiguity simultaneously adds to and confounds the presence of humor is both grand and far-reaching; that this multiple meaning sometimes leads to confusion, misinterpretation or even misplaced irritation speaks to the fundamental relationship between humor and ambiguity. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Ambrose Bierce: Animal Characteristics
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. Ambrose Bierce maintained that humanity mirrored many of the same characteristics as animals, stating that "in each human heart there is a tiger, a pig, an ass, and a nightingale. Diversity of characters is due to their unequal activity." It can easily be argued that Bierce's perception is quite accurate in that all of mankind has absorbed a great deal of idiosyncratic tendencies reflective of animal behavior. For example, as is mentioned in his quote, the human heart exhibits a vast array of illustrative attributes: the tiger's ferocity and independence; the pig's greed; the ass's stupidity; and the nightingale's delicacy and benevolence. Indeed, finding all of these qualities within a single individual is considerably more difficult than recognizing one or two; however, most of humanity displays a combination of all such animal characteristics at some point throughout life. The writer discusses these traits as they relate to Iago and Desdemona from Othello, Mustafa Sa'eed from Tayeb Salih's Season Of Migration, and Reginald Nwankwo and Gladys from Girls at War by Chinua Achebe. No additional sources cited.
