The concept of colonial institutionalization is looked at as are laws pertaining to what level of mental fitness was sufficient to allow someone to remain among the rest of society. Treatments for Schizophrenia: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Social Skills Training, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and Medication
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing some treatments for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is considered a life-long illness in which individuals experience delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and/or catatonic behavior among other symptoms. Without treatment, schizophrenics may be unable to cope with everyday experiences and this can negatively affect their social relationships, family function and occupational opportunities. Fortunately, there are several types of treatment which include anti-psychotic medications, cognitive-behavioral therapy, social skills training and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) among others. While almost all treatments report more success in combination with medication, medication alone cannot help individuals overcome the behaviors often associated with everyday stresses. From this perspective, cognitive behavioral therapy and social skills training are the most beneficial and in cases of severe depression accompanying schizophrenia, ECT has been reported to be extremely beneficial.

Troubled Artists: Creativity As A Catharsis
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Creativity often lends itself to abstract thought and behavior, ultimately labeling artistic types as being eccentric, peculiar and unconventional. Mental illness, which has been found as a preponderant and critical aspect of the uniqueness inherent to artists, is clearly a motivating factor in myriad creative celebrities, many of whom have punctuated this correlation by taking their own lives. Poet Anne Sexton and painter Vincent van Gogh both suffered from clinical depression, both were renown for their creativity and both took their own lives as a result of mental illness. Before they did, however, they allowed the world a glance into their tormented souls by way of poignant images and heartrending prose. Bibliography lists 3 sources. TLCarttroub.rtf
