Making it Crazy: an Ethnography of Psychiatric Clients in an American Community: A Review of the Book by Sue E. Estroff
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page review of the injustices associated with the mental health arena as presented by Sue Estroff. Estroff approaches her subject from the eyes of the patient in the institutional setting and because of this she illuminates many aspects of the interaction between the mental health patient, mainstream society, and the mental health profession which are not typically explored in the professional literature. Asserts that the mentally ill are discriminated against in this country by both the general public and mental health professionals. Draws parallels between the scenarios which unfold in "Making It Crazy: An Ethnography of Psychiatric Clients in an American Community" and the popular fictional film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Concludes that patients, mental health professionals and the general public share in the many wrongs which are apparent in the mental health arena and that will only be through the cooperation of each that the injustices which Estroff is so adept at illustrating will be righted. No additional sources are listed.

MAOA and Conduct Disorder
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page research paper that examines the links between MAOA, as a genetic factor, and the development of conduct disorder. There is a large body of empirical research that connects the development of conduct disorder to childhood maltreatment (Fergusson, Boden and Horwood, 2008; Jaffee, et al, 2004). However, a continuing debate addresses the question as to whether or not conduct disorder is a psychopathology or the consequence of abusive and/or neglectful parents. A recent and growing body of evidence indicates that the causes of conduct disorder are multifaceted, as there is evidence that indicates a genetic predisposition to conduct disorder, particularly in regards to MAOA activity studies. Bibliography lists 15 source.
