Social Oppression and Mental Health Therapy
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing social oppression and mental health therapy. Social oppression is prominent within the society of the United States and exists is various forms such as racism, classism, sexism and heterosexism. Social oppression within society has led to the self destructive behaviors of minorities because of overwhelming feelings of isolation, alienation, dual self identity and feeling powerless. Historically, mental health therapies have relied upon the assumptions of individualistic centered treatments which were developed in the 19th century for white middle class clients. Recently, mental health practitioners have been trying to develop guidelines which will help in the treatment of clients from socially oppressive situations. Studies involving populations of African Americans, Asians and women have found that individualistic approaches should be abandoned for treatments which include total assessment of all factors (ecosystems) which influence the lives of the clients and which have led to their oppression. These factors must be assessed and changed to attain a successful treatment.

Stress
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing stress as a necessary part of life and work which cannot be eliminated but can be managed. Stress is a natural occurrence in everyday life and cannot be eliminated whether or not individuals are male or female, go to work outside of the home, or remain within the home. Stress results from emotion adjustments and can be considered both positive and negative within individuals and affects both the emotional and physical elements within an individual. Not only can stress not be eliminated from people’s lives, but positive stress is needed. Positive stress is considered necessary in people’s lives as it enables them to initiate and complete projects and also look forward to any future changes within their lives. Negative stress, also known as unrelieved stress, can result in emotional or physical illness. Since stress cannot be eliminated from individual’s lives, researchers have developed certain steps, or levels, to help individual’s control the amount of unrelieved stress in their lives and to help them use stress in a positive manner. Mostly, individuals must realize that stressful situations will occur and emotional adjustments will be needed in daily life. Individual’s physical and emotional strength must be increased in order for them to better handle stressful situations and an examination and moderation of which events cause the most stress are recommended. In many work situations which have reported increased levels in overwork and stress, management must examine some the leading causes of stress in the work place such as new management techniques, long hours and bullying which need to be reduced in order to provide health work environments.
