"Mortality is Not Relative": James Rachels' Views on the Theory of Cultural Relativism
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page exploration of Rachels beliefs in regard to what determines certain cultural practices and whether or not there are inherent rights and wrongs in those practices. More specifically, Rachels explores the question of whether morality is a phenomena that varies according to culture, whether different cultures do in fact operate under different moral codes. Rachels points out that many cultures even diverge greatly from our Western precepts of right and wrong. He is particularly interested in the theory of cultural relativism, that theory that demands that we view behavior and situations in a world context rather than from the closely defined views of one culture. Rachels sees both positives and negatives in that theory, however. No additional sources are listed.

"Racializing" in Middletown, New York
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper examining demographic data for a culturally and ethnically diverse suburb town, followed by a discussion of how culture and race are dealt with by the police, business owners, community leaders and other members of the community. Most of the population of 25,000 claims cultural, ethnic or racial identification with specific groups for a much greater diversity landscape than exhibited in most other towns of similar size. It appears that the preponderance of racial and ethic differences in Middletown prevents the town from being burdened with illogical racial biases and prejudices. The effect might not be the same in a town either larger or smaller than Middletown, but here at least it appears to work quite well. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

"Sidewalk" By Mitchell Duneier
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Mitchell Duneier, a sociologist with a rather impressive curriculum vitae to his credit, spent five years of his otherwise privileged life keeping company with drunks, derelicts, drug addicts and the homeless on the sidewalks of New York's Greenwich Village. His purpose was not to exploit the individuals whose reason for being on these streets is to drum up whatever income they can by selling books and magazines; rather, it was to learn and understand why they were there. Many of the men with whom Duneier encountered were what one might consider as victims of society, those who were – for one reason or another – unable to assimilate themselves into the social norm; others, however, did not care to be involved with the stringent expectations of social norm and chose instead to seek out their living by way of this unique entrepreneurial approach. "The Culture of Fear" -- Alive and Well in Australia and the U.S.
[ send me this paper ]
This 4 page report discusses what author and sociologist Barry Glassner calls "The Culture of Fear." The premise of the report is that the amount of unrealistic fear that exists among the populations of some of the most developed nations of the world is most often directly related to the portrayal of horrific events by both the news and entertainment media. Two news reports related to a murder in Australia are used as examples. The concept of "moral panic" is also briefly discussed. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

No additional sources cited.
