Review of "Population Overload"
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper reviewing and critiquing Lou Dobbs' article, "Population Overload," which appeared in a newsmagazine in 2003, rehashing and updating many of the old complaints originating in the 1960s and 1970s leading to a doom-and-gloom outlook for the future of America. Dobbs correctly identifies many problems facing the US today – overcrowded, inefficient schools; inadequate health care systems; increased pressure on natural resources; urban sprawl; and the pressures of an increasingly large population that chooses not to adopt the language of the land. The problems are real and solution is difficult, uncomfortable or both; but Dobbs insists that America needs to treat symptoms of our problems rather than the causes. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Review Of Two Empirical Journal Articles On Adolescent Peer Interaction
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Examining the criteria that pertains to the formation of adolescent peer groups, Fink and Wild's "Similarities In Leisure Interests: Effects Of Selection And Socialization In Friendships" and Kipke et al's "Street Youth, Their Peer Group Affiliation And Differences According To Residential Status, Subsistence Patterns, And Use Of Services" provide empirical findings indicative of a combination of social, cultural and academic exchange. Fink and Wild (1995) approach their research from a dual perspective: How significant are interest similarities in relation to friendship choice, and "how does friendship foster the development of commonly shared leisure interests?" (p. 471). Kipke et al (1997) seek to determine how peer relationships and social support are "directly related to social competence, self-esteem, and overall well-being" (p. 655). Review of Two Sociology Studies
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page review of and commentary on two research articles. Both of these studies are revealing, Rosenhan's (1973) for its disturbing honesty; Walker's (1996) for its confirmation of conventional wisdom. Each study also could be used as preliminary information for more comprehensive studies of the same topics. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Rhetoric and Stereotypes
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses stereotypes. A stereotype can be looked upon as rhetorical shorthand, a brief, but readily understood way of indicating a widespread culturally understood conception of a specific type of person. It is a way in which a society deals with difference. For example, stereotypes are used frequently in regards to ethnic differences, as people "construct the Other as different from Us, with stereotypes thus becoming the building blocks of dichotomies...between 'Us' and 'Them'" (Tseliou and Eisler, 2007, p. 515). This examination of the rhetoric of stereotypes looks briefly at how politicians, tattooed people, feminists and senior citizens, which are all groups that have been frequently stereotyped. Rigoberta Menchu’s Expanding Understanding of “Community”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Rigoberta Menchu’s expanding understanding of “community”. Rigoberta Menchu, a Mayan born in poverty in Guatemala, probably did not intend to become an international spokesperson for human rights and global community responsibility but living in the oppressed poor population of Guatemala and seeing her family members killed by the government no doubt had a great impact on her perspective. Her father, a fighter for independence of the people of Guatemala was eventually killed for his beliefs and Menchu continued his battle. Her Mayan culture already had an open perspective of community responsibility in regards to the raising of children. This perspective of community was broadened to include the community of all of the people of her country through her education with Catholic Action which also provided her with the reading, writing and language skills needed to organize political action. Once in Mexico, Menchu realized the enormity of the oppression which existed throughout the world and her idea of community and global responsibility further expanded to include all those in the global community. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
