UK Inner City And Its Relationship To Public Policy

Typically the area of society where a significantly dense population resides, this centralized section of the city is home to considerably more ills than anywhere else. It is often the oldest, poorest and most overly populated, which establishes it as a haven for crime, violence and poverty. The inner cities of the UK are no different than the inner cities anywhere else around the world in that they reflect upon society's lesser privileged. In spite of the fact that many inner city residents are fine, upstanding citizens, they are caught in an endless cycle of economic depression that prevents them from escaping. And so this cycle continues to perpetuate itself to the point that the squalor, crime and broken down living conditions represent a larger segment of society than the surrounding communities dare to admit. Ulrich Beck’s Concept “Risk Society”

This is an 8 page paper describing Ulrich Beck’s notion of “risk society”. German sociologist Ulrich Beck and professor of sociology at the University of Munich is perhaps the best known for his various works on “risk society”. Fundamentally, Beck argues that today’s post-modern society is that of “Risikgesellschaft” or “risk society” which primarily means that “society’s members are confronted with socially-created risks which endanger the survival of the species” (Bancroft and Rogers, 2003). This “new modernity” in society has led to a great deal of individualization in which individuals make more decisions within their own lives as traditional aspects of guidance and norms no longer apply. In addition, the risks and hazards of today have led to a “reflexive modernization” in which the “compulsive dynamic of advanced” modernization propels individuals into “self-confrontation” with the consequences of the nature of the risks and hazards which cannot be controlled. Uncle Bill: Narrative

Since he was old enough to work, he would move from one job to another, making just enough money to get by and rarely having anything left as each payday rolled around. I never really knew what was going on since I was very young at the time; however, when I got older, I came to realize what a deadbeat Uncle Bill's father had been all his life. Naturally, having no positive influence during his childhood and adolescence, Uncle Bill learned how to be a bum just like his dad.
