The Concept Of Race As a Social Construct
[ send me this paper ]
In this 4 page research paper, the writer argues that race has no biological basis and is merely a socially-constructed concept-- created from perceptions conditioned by events of recorded history. The Concept of Racial Inferiority: Organizational Perpetuation
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page overview of racism as it has existed since the nineteenth century when anthropology, medicine, psychology, and sociology all became vehicles of racism as they proposed and supported theories which perpetuated disenfranchisement and segregation. Even the concept of evolution itself indirectly supported the predominant feeling that there was a hierarchical relationship between the races from the primitive to the advanced. The author of this paper presents the contention that our everyday classroom activities and even our standardized educational tests perpetuate the age-old institution of racism. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

The Construct of Ethnicity as revealed in Nella Larsen’s “Quicksand”, Amy Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club”, and Toni Morrison’s “Paradise”
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page discussion of ethnicity as it is reflected in these three novels. The author of this paper emphasizes that the constructs of ethnicity be interpreted in either positive or negative ways. Larsen’s novel, for example, provides us with a glimpse of the many negativities associated with being of mixed white and black heritage in the 1920s while Morrison’s novel reveals that even all-black communities and the individuals that live within them can be fraught with trouble and dissent. Amy Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club”, however, provides a much more positive look at the challenges and potential rewards which can be associated with ethnicity. No additional sources are listed.

The Construction of National Identity
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing the construction of national identity. National identity is said to be constructed out of several key elements. Firstly, members of a nation construct their national identity out of a shared collective memory of historical events. Many of these memories are actually based on myth but that is irrelevant if these ideals are shared by all. Because of the “selective” memory used in the construction of national identity, desirable aspects of a nation’s history are promoted while less desirable aspects are forgotten or hidden to protect the perception of the national identity. National identity is therefore highly social and interactive between the members of the state, its political system and educational systems among others. Collective national identity may also be based on aspects of shared language or shared cultural and religious beliefs. The concept of national identity is ever changing which relates to social, historical and political changes within the nations and their relationships with other nations around them. Regardless of the dynamic nature of national identity, it cannot be easily forced or changed from the decisions of a few although in many ways, promotion of national identity or collective history and memory is evident throughout the educational systems and the use of national symbols.

The Construction of the Colonial Order: From the Pages of History to Contemporary Times
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page contention that the same construction of the colonial order which has determined much of our history also controls many aspects of our contemporary world. This contention is presented with the backdrop of the historical interaction which occurred between colonizers and the colonized to emphasize that the same scenario is unfolding today even in countries like the United States as our tendency for the world view of “us” verses “them” determines our relations with one another. With such recent incidents as the Rodney King beating, a beating forever etched into our minds by the modern technological marvel of the video camera, the construction of the colonial order has progressed forward from the pages of history and into our contemporary social consciousness. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
