Review of "Fair Share or Status Quo? The Twin Cities Livable Communities Act"
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing this article by Edward Goetz. This article
is presented as being the report of "research," but its greatest value is in demonstrating when
research is not research at all. The article attempts to make broad generalizations without taking
broad categories into account. Using metropolitan housing as its focus, it examines
microeconomic conditions before and after wrenching changes in macroeconomic and national
changes in the decade of the 1970s, a time of double-digit inflation, wage and price controls and
eventually credit controls. In essence, it compares apples and oranges, concluding insight
measured in pears. Its greatest value lies in demonstrating how not to write a research article.

Review of "Population Overload"
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper reviewing and critiquing Lou Dobbs' article, "Population Overload," which appeared in a newsmagazine in 2003, rehashing and updating many of the old complaints originating in the 1960s and 1970s leading to a doom-and-gloom outlook for the future of America. Dobbs correctly identifies many problems facing the US today – overcrowded, inefficient schools; inadequate health care systems; increased pressure on natural resources; urban sprawl; and the pressures of an increasingly large population that chooses not to adopt the language of the land. The problems are real and solution is difficult, uncomfortable or both; but Dobbs insists that America needs to treat symptoms of our problems rather than the causes. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Review of Two Sociology Studies
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page review of and commentary on two research articles. One provides an account of the experiences of several volunteers entering mental hospitals in the early 1970s; the other studies couples' television viewing behavior, specifically as it involves use of the remote control. Both of these studies are revealing, Rosenhan's (1973) for its disturbing honesty; Walker's (1996) for its confirmation of conventional wisdom. Each study also could be used as preliminary information for more comprehensive studies of the same topics. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Risk Society
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page paper. What is the risk society? What is the world risk society? What makes the risks in the existing society different than the risks in previous societies? These are some of the questions addressed in this essay. Beck offered the concept of the risk society in the mid-1980s, and described it as a society in which advancements have led to unintended consequences that pose certain risks. The catalyst for the present risk society is industrial overproduction. Giddens took a different path. This essay explains and discusses what is meant by the terms 'risk society' and 'world risk society,' what brought it on and how it is conceptualized by social theorists. The writer also includes opinions regarding the validity of the statement. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
