Sociological Perspective of a Familiar Social Group

This is a 4 page paper discussing the social structures and relationships in a familiar social environment. In everyday life, individuals live, work and interact within social groups, structures and institutions which affect not only relationships with other individuals but also the definition of one’s class and appropriate social behaviors. Using a familiar example of a social group, in this case a weekly social curling league (a “secondary social group”), it can be seen that even in social situations, there are several social structures, rules, expectations, social controls and examples of deviance which exist. Despite the complex relationships which can exist between individuals, team members and between the teams themselves, the members of the social curling league know the social structure which exists between them and the social norms expected and seamlessly accept them and have an enjoyable evening together. Sociological Study of the Impact of Genetics Research

This is a 7 page paper discussing the sociological concerns of genetic research. Genetic research is a concern for social scientists who feel that largely the “explosion” of knowledge which has occurred in the field of genetic research has not considered the ethical, legal, moral and social impact the research will ultimately have on society. Already those concerned about genetic research have noted the shifts in health care research funding which have left many diseases which affect the overall populations unfunded and instead focused the funding on specific diseases which may or may not be related more to certain ethnic groups. Legally, the increasing number of genetic databases which are kept on individuals may be used for issues relating to insurance, employer files or criminal profiling and critics are concerned that the rights of privacy also will be violated. In addition, concerns in genetic research has led to discussions regarding the rights of disable persons, women and minorities and the ultimate effects of cloning and the human genome project. Largely, most social scientists feel that genetic research will not aid in maintaining the diversity in society but will lead to increasing prejudice and bias. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

An examination of five recent articles found in Canadian newspapers regarding divorce in Canada has touched on several sociological theories. Largely, liberal feminism theories have been prevalent in regards to the accessibility of divorce to women which has occurred within the last century. This accessibility is seen as a step toward equal opportunity for women. However, from an economic standpoint, women are seen as better off within a marriage as the rate of divorced women with families has gradually increased over the years as women not only have lower overall incomes but also have the increased financial responsibility of the custody of the children in most cases. Lastly, Parsons’ theories relating to the function of the family unit relate to articles which show how the socialization of the children and the stabilization of the adult personality are not continued when divorce separates a family.
