Deviance
[ send me this paper ]
12 pages in length. To stray from the norm is to deviate from socially acceptable behavior; when one is deviant, he goes against the very essence of what society has deemed acceptable. One of the easiest things in life is to deviate from what is considered by the masses to be normal; in fact, Morpheus points out that it is often considerably more difficult to remain upon a straight and narrow path with the myriad obstacles that appear in daily life. It can readily be argued that deviant behavior has found its niche within contemporary society, even to the point of infiltrating what is considered to be a standard of normalcy. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Deviance and Society: Different Interpretations for Different Contexts
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the labeling theory of deviance, the tendency of society to place labels on individuals on the basis of them not belonging to the group doing the labeling. Ties together the self-fulfilling prophesy of Thomas Merton, the interactionist perspective of E. Goffman, the theories of H.S. Becker that social groups create deviance by making the rules whose infraction constitutes deviance, and the philosophies of Emile Durkheim that extreme economic variation results in deviance labeling. Equates these theories to power differentials in which gender, class, ethnicity, and economics all play a role in perpetuating deviance. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Different Perspectives of Socialization within Society and The Development of the Concept of Self
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing the different perspectives of socialization in society in relation to self-image and adaptation. Socialization for individuals within society takes place from different perspectives as members of society change their roles throughout their lives and must learn the different socialization tactics related to each new role they adopt. Children and adolescents learn from the failures and successes within the socialization process which helps them to adapt to new stressful situations in addition to developing their self-image. Success in the socialization process creates a positive self-image whereas failures in the socialization process may lead to negative self-image. In addition to members within society adapting to new roles, which also include joining organizational institutions which use a variety of socialization tactics for newcomers, people from other cultures also have to learn various tactics for socialization within their new society. Sociologists advocate that society has developed a great many inequalities in the divisions between groups which exist and depending on the success or failure of adaptation through socialization, newcomers in societies will also form concepts of their self-image which may or may not allow them to conform and cross societal divisions. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
