The Study of Gender Relations and Racism, Classism, Heterosexism and Anti-Semitism
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing gender relations and the study of racism, classism, heterosexism and anti-Semitism. Gender as a concept has often been a source for social inequality as too have race, class, sexuality and religion. A study of gender relations however shows that gender, as with many other issues of inequality, is actually a social construct and not a primary attribute of an individual. Gender, like race, class, sexuality and religion, is often misunderstood and the cause of prejudice based on traditional, white, upper class, male, Western social theories. Recent psychoanalytical, cultural and feminist studies, on the other hand, reveal that most of the “predefined” concepts used today are actually social constructs which vary from culture to culture and a “consciousness raising” must occur in order to overcome the hierarchical organizations which lead to inequality.

The Theories of Mead, Blumer and Blau
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing the integration of the theories of Mead, Blumer and Blau. The Chicago School was known for its development in the areas of philosophy and the social sciences and was the base for the popular sociological and cognitive psychological theories of contextuality, symbolic interaction and social structure. Mead developed his theory from the biological, based on Darwin and evolved his theory to include cognitive psychological elements and conceived of the idea of symbolic interaction and the social self. Blumer accepted the scientific aspects of the social elements but did not focus his efforts to the contextual elements which were often at the base of the Chicago School. Blau, on the other hand, continued on with the image of the social self but related that element back again to the contextual process which occurs within a society that is based on the nominal and gradation differentiations and these differentiations constrain an individual’s choices, preferences and perceptions.

The Transformation of Everyday Life and the Evolution of a "Creative Class"
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page review of Richard Florida's "The Rise of the Creative Class and How It's Transforming Work, Leisure, Community and Everyday Life". Examining the presumed experiences of two time travelers, one who travels from 1900 to 1950 and the other who travels from 1950 to the present, the contention is presented that neither has our technology been responsible for the shaping of our culture nor have the stronger members in our society imposed their values on the rest of the world in order to shape this culture. Instead we have changed because we sought change and the evolution of a Creative Class has been a critical element in this process. No additional sources are listed.
