The History of Joe Robbie Stadium (Pro Player Stadium)
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing Joe
Robbie's radical departure from the norm in gaining modern facilities for his Miami Dolphins.
Robbie bought the Dolphins in 1965, and the existing Orange Bowl had been their home
stadium for decades. Though the Orange Bowl stadium was 50 years old in the 1980s, local
government owners would not approve any substantial renovations and provided only minimal
maintenance. Joe Robbie managed some creative financing for his $110 million stadium,
building it in less than four years completely with private funds, none of which were his own.
The Robbie family sold both the stadium and the Dolphins to Wayne Huizenga after Robbie's
death in 1990, and a marketing arrangement has it renamed to Pro Player Stadium until 2006.

Literature looking at the impact on the hotel industry is sparse, and is contradictory, some indicates short and long term benefits, and others look at long term costs and the negative results. A third perspective argues that the result depend on the city and the level of maturity in the tourism industry. This paper looks at the various ideas and then compares data taken form the hotel industries in Sydney and Salt Lake City to assess the short and long term impacts. Both indicate an increases in demand in the years leading up to the games and fall in demand and income in the years after the games but the levels of gain and loss are very divergent.
