“Glass Ceilings and Bottomless Pits : Women's Work, Women’s Poverty”
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page review of the book by Randy Albeda and Chris Tilly. is an expose’ on the numerous societal factors which are facing women today. It is a look into poverty as many of us have never seen poverty, a look at the blatant and sometimes shocking facts of being a poor woman in the United States, the facts of that ever present “bottomless pit”. It is also a look, however, a the so-called “glass ceiling” which confronts professional women in the workplace. This paper contends that while the two scenarios are definitely different, they are inherently related to the same societal factors of the patriarchal dominated society which has been in place for the history of mankind. No additional sources are listed.

“Nest in the Wind : Adventures in Anthropology on a Tropical Island”: A Review
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page overview of the book by Martha C. Ward. This book provides not only insight to the people of the island on which Ward is stationed but also into the mindset and thinking of the author herself. This paper contends, however, that this book is a window into the lives and the experience of the people Ward is investigating, not a reflection of preconceived ideas as to how these people somehow innately fall at a lower echelon on the totem pole than our so-called more advanced society. The author of this paper asserts, however, that there is an underlying issue broached by Ward. This issue is the depiction of gender roles in this primitive society and how these roles relate to the patriarchal domination which has so heavily impacted the world as a whole. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

“The Awakening”: An Analysis of Women’s Roles in Chopin’s Novel
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page review of the role of women in terms of their societal class and race. The author asserts that while there are many peripheral female characters in “The Awakening” each is treated as though she is invisible both by Chopin and her protagonist “Edna Pontellier”. This paper attempts to provide an understanding of the importance of those women and the reason they were treated as though they were invisible. Not only does economics play a role in that perception of invisibility, so too does race. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
