The Study of Gender Relations and Racism, Classism, Heterosexism and Anti-Semitism
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing gender relations and the study of racism, classism, heterosexism and anti-Semitism. Gender as a concept has often been a source for social inequality as too have race, class, sexuality and religion. A study of gender relations however shows that gender, as with many other issues of inequality, is actually a social construct and not a primary attribute of an individual. Gender, like race, class, sexuality and religion, is often misunderstood and the cause of prejudice based on traditional, white, upper class, male, Western social theories. Recent psychoanalytical, cultural and feminist studies, on the other hand, reveal that most of the “predefined” concepts used today are actually social constructs which vary from culture to culture and a “consciousness raising” must occur in order to overcome the hierarchical organizations which lead to inequality.

The Subjugation of Women From Ancient Times to the Seventeenth Century
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page discussion of the ancient and historic subjugation of women. Contends that while differences in the societal roles between men and women may at one time have been justifiable, this justification has not been valid for centuries. Points out change became a particularly obvious part of the Victorian Era. Concludes that different women took different approaches to effect the changes which they saw as necessary in regard to their traditional gender roles in the Victorian Era. While many chose to stay in the home in the same role they had occupied for years, others sought jobs, and still others sought education. In comparison to the women's movement which we know today, the women's movement of this earlier time was muted to say the least. Never-the-less progress was made and women slowly began to carve their own niche into society as a whole. Bibliography lists 1 source.

The Use of Metaphors in Judy Ruiz’s Essay “Oranges and Sweet Sister Boy”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the use of metaphors in Ruiz’s essay “Oranges and Sweet Sister Boy”. Judy Ruiz’s 1988 essay “Oranges and Sweet Sister Boy” tells of the experience and feelings a woman has when her brother informs her that he is having a sex change operation and will now be her “sister”. In an effort to grasp this realization, the narrator tells the story of her and her brother through a series of flash backs which seem to help clarify for her that her brother’s decision is his own and he seems to be happy with it. Another method the narrator uses to clarify the situation for herself is her use of metaphors, the most prominent being the orange, which symbolize aspects of life and how well life in lived. In addition to the orange metaphors, the narrator also uses other fruit and food metaphors to describe personalities, as well as sexual metaphors, clothing metaphors and lingo used within the mental health system.
